JAMB Conducts UTME In UK, South Africa & 6 Other Countries

THE JOINT ADMISSIONS AND MATRICULATION BOARD (JAMB) SAYS IT HAS RECORDED A HUGE SUCCESS IN THE CONDUCT OF UNIFIED TERTIARY MATRICULATION EXAMINATIONS (UTME) IN EIGHT COUNTRIES.
The countries include UK, Cameroon, Benin Republic, Côte d’Ivoire and South Africa.

The board’s Head of Media and Information Department, Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

According to him, not less than 297 foreign candidates participated in the 2018 UTME in the countries conducted on Saturday, April 14, under the supervision of some foreign nationals, who came to understudy the process.

Mr Benjamin said the foreigners were elated by what they saw that an African country could achieve and sustain such a feat.

“The examination was conducted yesterday in not less than eight foreign countries under the watch of some foreign nationals.

“As usual, it was well attended and very successful. All resources to ensure the smooth conduct of the examination were readily deployed by the board.

“We are indeed happy to have achieved yet another feat especially as we had people who came around to observe and understudy the process.

“They were happy as well as impressed with what they saw on ground. We know it can only be better because we have the capacity and all it takes to move this country to the next level,” he said.

“Again, we are not just conducting the examination in these countries because of the number of candidates that indicate interest but because we also want to showcase Nigeria’s giant strides in technological advancement on the global scene.”

Meanwhile, JAMB has distanced itself from a purported cutoff mark being circulated in some sections of the media, saying it did not emanate from the board.

Mr Benjamin said no such cutoff mark, whether for programmes or institutions had been released by JAMB as was being speculated.

“We want to seize this medium to debunk such rumours as they are malicious and wicked as they are designed to defraud innocent Nigerians, especially parents and guardians as well as other stakeholders.

“No cutoff marks will ever be decided upon without the usual policy meeting which has been scheduled to hold sometime in June and which is to be chaired by the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu.

“Until that is done, every other thing that is being paraded as cutoff mark is fictitious and therefore, the public is hereby warned not to fall prey to these fraudsters.

“In the same vein, any institution that has commenced any form of admission without the official cutoff mark as would be decided upon at the June policy meeting is doing so illegally,” Mr Benjamin warned.

He said as a board, the management would continue to uphold standards and due process to protect the integrity of its examinations and process. (NAN)

Canon shots kill Delta Deputy Speaker’s aide at PDP rally

A driver to the Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Jerry Ojugbeli, was killed on Thursday by Canon shots to herald the entry of dignitaries at the Ndokwa West PDP Local Government Council election campaign flag off rally at Kwale.

Eyewitnesses reveal that the incident occurred as the state governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa and other dignitaries arrived Kwale stadium, venue for the rally.

Narrating further, a source stated that when the canon was fired, it flew straight towards the deceased at a close range and hit him badly, adding that the crowd’s attention was already at the stadium, so help did not come on time and he died before he could be rushed to he hospital.

“This is very strange because the canon when fired normally enters the ground, but sadly this particular one flew like a rocket through the car shattering glasses and hit Ojugbeli and also injured two others close to the canon shots.

Because people were already seated and the rally started, he was not attended to promptly, considering the degree of injuries he sustained, maybe he would have survived, but help came a bit too late”, the source noted.

Nevertheless, the rally went on as schedule, but when the news of his death filtered into the venue, the rally was brought to close. Governor Okowa expressed sadness over the untimely death of Ojugbeli.

Kwara State House Of Assembly Suspends 2018 Budget

The House of Assembly in Kwara State on Wednesday announced the suspension of  the 2018 Appropriation Bill following non-implementation of its directive on school fees in the state polytechnic.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the lawmakers had on December 13, in a resolution, advised the state government to compel the management of the polytechnic to revert to old school fees.

The House, in its resolution after adopting the report of its Committee on Education, said that the measure was in view of the current economic hardship in the country.

The Speaker, Ali Ahmad, while reading the House’s resolution at the end of the committee’s meeting, wondered why the polytechnic management should refuse to accept the old school fees from the students.

Mr. Ahmad said that N300 million had already been provided and approved in the 2018 budget for the institution to cater for the shortfall in the fund to be realised from school fees.

The speaker, while suspending further consideration of the budget, summoned the State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Aminat Hammed, the Secretary to the Government, Alhaji Isiaka Gold and Special Adviser on Tertiary Institutions.

He said that they should appear before it on Wednesday by 4.00 p.m for clarification on the 2018 budget for the polytechnic.

The speaker said that the officers were also expected to explain why the polytechnic should ignore the lawmakers’ directive on school fees payment.

Angry parents pull kids from school as Ivanka Trump visits

First daughter and presidential adviser Ivanka Trump made a surprise visit to a Connecticut high school—prompting some parents who oppose President Trump’s agenda to yank their kids from classes Monday.

Trump appeared at the Norwalk Early College Academy to talk to its students about the importance of career education.

“To see the passion and enthusiasm for bringing real life skills into a classroom environment but then coupling it with real life experience through internship creates this really beautiful virtuous angle,” she said, News 12 New Jersey reported.

Parents say they didn’t know that Trump was scheduled to speak to their kids—information they suspect was withheld due to security concerns.

“This should have been brought to our attention, although I do understand security reasons,” parent Karey Fitzgerald told News 12. “I think we should have had the choice to send our child to school or keep them home.” she added.
Not all parents were opposed to the visit.

Parent Angela Yaneth Guzman replied to a photo from Trump’s visit on Facebook, and thanked her for speaking to her son.

“My son Nicolas Guzman is a NECA student and you talked to him today and he’s so excited about it. It’s something He will never forget. Thank you Ivanka,” she wrote.

Army Colonel to spend 6 years in jail for announcing plans to contest in 2018 presidential election in Egypt

An Egyptian military court sentenced a colonel to six years in prison on Tuesday after he announced plans to stand in the 2018 presidential election, his lawyer said.

Ahmed Konsowa was given the jail term for “stating political opinions contrary to the requirements of military order”, his lawyer Asaad Heikal said.

The colonel had announced he would be a candidate for president in video messages and a statement on Facebook on November 29.

He was also accused of “appearing on the social network website Facebook in military uniform, contrary to the requirements of military order,” Heikal said.

The 42-year-old has been in custody since his arrest on December 2 as military prosecutors investigated the case, Heikal said.

On Tuesday, the lawyer said he will appeal the verdict.

In his videos, and without mentioning President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi by name, Konsowa criticised Egypt’s policies in education, health and the economy.

Heikal has said Konsowa followed Sisi’s example in announcing his candidacy. Sisi was in uniform when he did so, before later resigning as defence minister.

Sisi was elected president in 2014, a year after leading the military’s ouster of his Islamist predecessor Mohamed Morsi amid mass protests against his year-long rule.

Sisi is certain to stand next year, although he has yet to formally announce his candidacy. (Aljazeera)

A Twitter user, Adetutu Balogun has uncovered media publications since 1984, that revealed how President Muhammadu Buhari has consistently blamed others for his own mistakes.
